Stop Jumping Out of the Car!

Here’s a very easy way to start teaching your dog to wait in the car until they are given permission to come out.

  1. Start at home where they won’t be too eager to jump out in the first place. Have some treats at the ready.

  2. Slowly open the cart door (I wait until they are sitting before I open the door) and use your body to block them from jumping out.

  3. Feed them a treat right away for simply being in the car with the door open.

  4. When you feel confident they are not going to jump out, take a step back.

  5. Return to them and feed them for staying put!

  6. Continue stepping farther and farther away, eventually just walking around, and always returning to feed the dog for staying put.

  7. When you are ready, give them a release cue, like “Free!” then toss a treat on the ground and encourage them to go get it.
